Artists Become Artists ...., Why Art? One of the most interesting aspects about art is
understanding the why and the how of "becoming" an artist. There is a myth that
artists are somehow born knowing that they are artists, or that some event occurs
in their lives that causes them to become artists, or that artists starve, artists
are misunderstood, artists are creative undisciplined types who could only ever
be artists, etc. I have met many artists during my life, and I have found that
very few of them meet common stereotypes. It has been suggested that all of us
at one point or another produced what can arguably be called "art". We all sought
image making as a form of communication and pleasure.
Every
child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.
(Pablo Picasso)
As
children we played with crayons, and created rather miraculous (so we thought)
things. As some point, however, (my guess is that for you, like me, it was around
age 10) we begin to recognise that our images lacked the sophistication we desired.
The fact is, around the late primary grades, most of us lost our interest in visual
art because we didn't get the positive personal reinforcement we needed to continue.
To
be an artist is to believe in life. (Henry Moore) My
development in arts where attributed to my father, photographer and an artist
and thankful to my art teacher - Mrs Yonne Thorn at Sherrardswood Senior School
(Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire ) encouraged me to follow my heart and desires
in using my gift in Art. Thus ended with an 'A' Level in art and final qualification
in the field of commercial art as Graphics Designer and Technical Illustrator.
What
an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because
of course art is about sharing: you wouldn't be an artist if you didn't want to
share an experience, a thought. (David Hockney)
