ree of Life — Preserved with Elegance
A Museum-Quality Conservation Framing Commission by ICAS Vilas Art Gallery
At ICAS Vilas Art Gallery, we see exceptional framing as an art form in itself, blending craftsmanship, preservation, and a keen eye for beauty. Each commission is an opportunity to create more than a border; it is a chance to honour the story within, elevate its presence, and safeguard it for generations to come.
For this distinguished project, we were entrusted with conserving a large, personal Family Tree of Life papyrus, measuring 60cm by 100cm. Steeped in meaning and delicate by nature, this piece called for a presentation that would both protect its fragile beauty and elevate it with subtle, refined luxury.
To harmonise with the papyrus’s natural tones and textures, we chose a soothing heritage green mount board from the Larson-Juhl collection (reference 8614). This thoughtfully selected shade offered a graceful backdrop, subtly highlighting the papyrus’s intricate contours and hand-finished edges. Float-mounting the artwork with nearly invisible supports allowed it to hover above the board, lending the piece an airy presence, genuine character, and a touch of quiet drama.
For the outer frame, we selected a distinguished profile from the renowned Italian Michelangelo Series I: an elegant scoop moulding finished in aged antique light green (reference 664 9GN). Its gentle patina and classical lines added depth, harmony, and a sense of timeless refinement, perfectly echoing the artwork’s organic spirit.
To provide both protection and visual harmony, the papyrus was set behind UV-filtered conservation glass, shielding its delicate surface from damaging light. A precisely measured 10mm ivory fillet created a gentle inner space, letting the papyrus breathe and casting a soft shadow that deepened its sense of dimension. The finished frame, measuring 77cm by 107cm, offered a presentation worthy of any museum.
The completed piece exceeded the client’s hopes, transforming this Family Tree of Life into a striking work of enduring beauty. It became a true centrepiece, destined not just for admiration but for generations to cherish. We suggested displaying the finished work in a prominent family room or main living space, where its presence could be fully appreciated. As with all treasured works on papyrus and natural materials, we also advised keeping it away from direct sunlight and radiator heat to preserve its beauty and integrity for years to come.
At ICAS, we define luxury framing through discernment, craftsmanship, and genuine care: the art of creating a setting that is truly worthy of the artwork it holds.
