THE STORY OF GLASS ART
How is glass made? Glass is created by melting sand and alkali together at very high temperatures. Imagine mixing these ingredients in a super-hot oven until they become a glowing, liquid mixture! This process was first used to make glass vessels in the Near East around 1600 BC. Back then, people crafted beautiful, brightly colored glass by coating a clay core with molten glass and decorating it with colourful swirls. These glass pieces, often shaped into small bottles, jars, and jugs, were considered so special that only the wealthiest people could afford them. Glass was treasured almost like a precious gemstone. As time passed, glass became even more fascinating. In Egypt, around 1450 BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III, glass was developed for both decoration and practical use. Imagine ancient artisans creating colourful beads and delicate vessels to delight their royal families. Later, the Romans helped glass spread far and wide when they adopted glassblowing, a clever technique invented by the Phoenicians. This made it easier for more people to enjoy glass items.
One of the most breathtaking achievements in glass history is the stained glass windows in grand European cathedrals—think of sunlight streaming through vibrant pictures made entirely of glass! Over the centuries, talented glassmakers and studios, including Tiffany, Lalique, Daum, Gallé, the Corning schools in New York, and Steuben Glass Works, have elevated glass to new heights, creating works of art cherished worldwide. And let’s not forget Murano Glass from Venice, Italy—a shining example of centuries of skill and imagination, still admired today as some of the finest glass art on the planet.
