Biography
John Mills was born in London England, 1933. He is married to Josephine
Demarne in 1953, with two children Dylan and Andrea.
He
studied at Hammersmith School of Art 1947-1954 and Royal College of Art 1956 -1960.
Teaching
Various part
time posts in UK 1958 - 1962. Senior Lecturer St.Albans School of Art 1962-1970.
Principal Lecturer Hertfordshire College of Art and Design 1970-1977. Visiting
associate Professor, University of Eastern Michigan. Visiting Lecturer Detroit
School of Creative Arts 1970. Visiting Professor and Artist In Residence, University
of Michigan. Stopped teaching on a regular basis 1977. Made Fellow of the Royal
Society of British Sculptors 1982. Elected President of the Society 1986. Made
Fellow of the RSA 1993.
One
Man Show Held one man exhibitions on a regular basis since 1959, including
shows in London and other cities in the UK, Canada, USA, France, Australia and
Germany.
Mixed
Shows Contributed to mixed exhibitions in various countries since the RA 1956
and including Chelsea Harbour 1993.
Commissions
Commissioned work includes work done for Sea Containers, P&O Cruises, Royal
Caribbean Cruise Lines, The Royal Institution, Rank Xerox, Wansbeck DC, Waite
Development, Westminster City Council.
Corporate
and Private Collectors Includes Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, The London

Comparisons 1990 " Bronze
sculpture editions 3/3 size: 55cm x 72cm The inspiration for this sculpture
is the comparing of physical changes that occur as one gets older. My interest
in the strong body and its defining musculature relates to my past activities
both as a springboard diver and a physical training instructor during my National
Service. I try to give my figures the strength and dynamic that is associated
with specific body types that develop from particular use. In this case 'body
building' is the underlying activity and comparing muscular development is a constant
factor in this sport.Product
