Lisa Wendt was first introduced to the gallery in a major exhibition of arts from the African continents in the " Spirits of Africa " exhibition September 2000. The exhibition included works by other artists from South Africa. Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Kenya.

  Lisa Wendt born in South Africa The notion that art is boundless and needs free and innovative exploration and expression, is what inspires her work. Her earliest childhood memories were those of creative experiences in a home filled with a musical father and a mother with inspirational decorating flair. Lisa`s lifelong passion for the arts led her to study Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
  She was selected for the Martienssen Exhibition which allowed students the experience of exposure. This exposure led to commissions such as the POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse) calendar, which selected artists to produce compelling and challenging images dealing with women abuse. Lisa`s thesis, based on the Female Grotesque, challenged notions of female form and social/cultural status. The immediate environment and experiences play a vital role in all her works. The images she select all form a lexicon of her experiences. At this time when South Africa is
  re-awakening, an African Renaissance is occuring in which indiginous and contemporary cultures are integrating. While many advancements are being made, there is a longing to preserve traditional cultural practices, and a need to pass them on from one generation to the next. It is this story-telling and preservation of what has passed, that interests her in depicting Khoisan culture. Rather than historically correct renditions, lisa`s works represent her own individual interpretation of Khoisan art. This includes her interest in portraying a story or part thereof - a fragment of the whole, just as if the stone/canvas appears to be a chip taken from a larger part. Bits of everyday activities such as hunting, fishing, gathering, cooking and dancing occupy my subject matter. Just as important are the techniques used, processes of woodcarving, thick layers of paint which are sun-baked, and the layering and blending of oxides. The surface of the artwork is therefore gradually built up. Once the finer detail is applied, the surface is moistened and blotted to reveal the underlying colours. This process of building up and removing of layers is important: a patina begins to form, as if a history that was once there, is fading yet can be brought to the surface once again.
  All the works hopefully impart an African spirit to the viewer. In the abstract pieces, geometric lines are softened by organic curves which make up the warrior figures. The combination of natural and man-made materials (often used in crafts produced for the commercial market) poses an interesting shift in traditional and contemporary African art. The nonfigurative abstract works allow for the viewer to interpret them according to their own experiences.
  Lisa has completed numerous corporate commissions, however, it is the work that hangs in private collections that she feel more passionate about. With artistic expression, a very personal part is handed over from the artist to the viewer. With this exchange I hope that each time my work of art is enjoyed or critiqued, new meaning is found according to each viewer's experience.
