The Art of Collagraphy
Individually crafted by the artist a collagraph's either Dark Brown with Pink highlights or Sea Blue on deep textured paper combine to give each individually numbered print a unique impact and appeal. A collagraph is a print taken from an image which has been built up in the same way as a collage. In some cases this might be layers of card and paper which have been skillfully bonded and varnished. After painstaking experiment Kim has developed a technique using hard resin which is then fixed to the surface of a plate. When inked and printed onto damp paper it creates a variety of textures and heavy embossing. The inking and printing process is the same as the standard intaglio method, which includes etching. Here the ink is rubbed onto a plate and excess removed with scrim so that the ink from its grooves transfers to the paper to create the image. Once the paper has dried further colours are added with relief block printing and by hand. Finally, gold foil is carefully applied to enhance the visual effect of the print.
Kim Major-George`s signed limited edition of 15 AP Collagraphs are available.

‘Pearls of Wisdom’ and ‘Timeless Truth’ - Collagraphs
Kim Major-George is predominately a collagraph artist and has been working in this medium for many years. Her fascination with collagraph arose whilst working as a book illustrator in the 90s and was searching for a technique to depict dream scenes for a book for which she had been commissioned. Her fascination with collagraph is still evident today and she spends her year fulfilling her private commissions, creating new collections for the many exhibitions in which she is featured, together with teaching collagraph in schools and art centres throughout the country. She is currently writing a book on the amazing application of collagraph entitled: ‘Taking Textured Collagraphs to the edge’.

Age of Enlightenment’ Sculptural Panel
Kim Major-George has created this series of sculptural panels depicting the 3 stages of the Buddha’s enlightenment, representing episodes of the Buddha’s life and teachings. The first panel of the series is, ‘Desire’, depicts the early years, moving onto the middle panel, ‘Enlightenment’, representing his most spiritually active years and finally the last panel ‘ Peace’, showing the final years of bliss and contentment. These panels are available as a set in two sizes, 90 x 90 cm and 60 x 60 cm. All are individually made in the artist’s studio using paper and layers of gesso creating the raised textured surfaces. The final layer of acrylic paints are applied creating the finished result of peace and contentment bringing these striking thought provoking images to life.

Biography

About the artist:
Kim Major-George has a distinctive style of working whether using collagraph techniques or creating sculptural panels. Her subject matters for many years have been her own mastery of the rich spiritual iconography. Her interest in esoteric / mythology and early spiritual imagery has greatly influenced her art. After graduating from Art & Design college Kim‘s art career has spanned over 30 years ranging from surface pattern designing for the gift industry, teaching Art and Design, to book illustrating in the 90s.
Following her personal journey, Kim has been specializing in esoteric art for over 10 years and many of her evocative dream imageries, angels, and unicorns have been commercially produced for the Mind Body and Spirit industry. She has taken the basic collagraph process further by her very individual technique of hand embellishing with mixed media, iridescence metallic threads and precious metals, creating unique pieces.

Artist statement:
After working for many years in the art world as a teacher, workshop leader, designer and illustrator, my imagery has developed a strong esoteric feel with many of my commissions being for the Mind Body and Spirit industry. With my Collagraphs artworks created in my studio I certify each one as a unique work of art, with a print run of only 15 hand embellished using gold leaf and mixed medium. Therefore guaranteeing each image as my own creation, as a work of art. Each picture can be very different but all have a strong dreamlike quality.
