INDIAN
SUMMER
United Kingdom — Like the sprawling subcontinent itself, modern and contemporary
Indian artists have a marvelously bold way with colour, and they produce work
that is resonant with their region and with the Indian past. This makes much of
the work uplifting, rich, and quite strange to our eyes, which we are used to
perhaps, thinking that Indian art consists primarily of exquisite Moghul miniatures
and Rajasthani art..
Yes, many modern Indian masters refer back to the
iconography of the past, but the younger generation of artists is more concerned
with contemporary issues engendered by the globalization of culture and how ART
could bridge the gap between the East and West.
Auction prices both in
the UK and USA are indicators of how Indian arts have recently been going through
the roof for modern Indian masters such as
Laxma Goud, M.F. Husain
and F.N. Souza, and the Indian art sales
to be held in London through the summer will no doubt push prices for these well-known
artists even further up the seismic scale.

ASIT
KUMAR SARKAR EXPRESSION INDIAN ART COLLECTION
Asit Kumar Sarkar work was first introduced in a group exhibition Art of Living 2007.
We
are the exclusive dealer for Asit original and limited edition prints. For more
information kindly contact the gallery for an appointment to view his Collection.
Asit
Kumar Sarkar collection includes paintings from mono expressionist works to vibrant,
bold paintings in the medium of acrylics. His two mono colour paintings from the
MANKIND series - This body of work is symbolic of the human race and how we have
evolved . Depicting the pain that is an inseparable part of human destiny, Asit
`s works have a pervasive atmosphere of thoughtfulness that raises many questions.
His simplistic use of dark areas leaving little for the imagination to wonder
at and the highlighted areas keep the mind interested. The minimalist use of sketch
lines in the construction of his faces, almost working like a sculptor, here reminded
of Rodin`
s "Thinker
" .
The image of a male thinker deep in thought.
" We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts."

in today` s modern times.

INDIAN DRAMA II
Indian drama and theatre is perhaps as old as its music
and dance. Classical theatre traditions have also influenced modern theatre, particularly
the Hindi, Marathi and Bengali theatres. The tradition of folk theatre is alive
in nearly all the linguistic regions of India. Today modern days of Indian drama
is an attribute to the growing demand of cinema, ( Bollywood film ) that has opened
it to the mass. The influence of Indian Drama can be traced back to the great
epic period of Indian civilization of Ramayan,
Radha
Krishna, Mahabharata,
and the recent period of the Rajasthani
and
Moghul dynasty.
THE DRAMA OF INDIA -
an article was originally published in A Short History of the Drama. Martha Fletcher
Bellinger. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1927. pp. 99-102. INDIA is one of
the few countries which can boast of an indigenous drama, unaffected by any foreign
influence. When Hindu plays first became known to the European world through Sir
William Jones' translation of Sakuntala
in 1789, it was then generally thought that Greek literature had penetrated into
India, influencing their playwrights; but that opinion does not prevail today.
Most critics agree that Hindu drama was neither a borrowing nor an imitation,
but the product of native genius.

SARANGI PLAYER
Sarangi - a very important string instrument used in both the
folk and classical styles. Its sound is considered to be the closest to the human
voice. Made with a hollow piece of wood, covered by a parchment, it usually has
three main playing strings but several others for a drone. It is played with a
bow. The Sarangi has many variants. What is seen in the Mathura area of Uttar
Pradesh is a simpler version of the Sarangi, with a smaller round head, fewer
strings and ghunghroos attached to the bow.
And finally a collection
of six small paintings size: 24" x 20" - This body of work sum up both the areas
that influenced the changes and direction of Asit artistic career, tracing back
to his family roots of Indian classical music and dance. Asit reverts to his painter
brush to convey Indian culture in harmony with music and dance, through his own
unique style of rich heavy textures and brush stokes in acrylic medium, with light
glaze of vanish applied over the surface, creating images that are close to his
heart.

BANSURI PLAYER
Bansuri (Flute) - it hardly needs any introduction given its
global popularity. It is a simple bamboo stick with one hole to blow into and
6, 8 or 9 holes for producing the notes.
